She looked at me.

Did she glance at me, notice me, look at me, or gaze at me? Does 見る include all these possibilities or suggest just one of them more than the others?

  • glanced at me = (normal) チラっと見た or (casual) チラ見した
  • noticed me = 気づいた
  • gazed at me = じっと見た or 見つめた or 凝視した (pron. ぎょうし)

These are not interchangeable with 見た.

見る can be Look, See, Watch, View, Examine, but “notice” and “glance” are different words (I assume gaze is too).

There are other kanji you can use for みる though: 観, 視, and 診 (and others less common). They all have different nuances and you’d probably translate them all a little differently. Here’s an overview:
