“Do it for yourself” means 自分のためにする (i.e. It’s not sacrificing yourself but doing it would eventually benefit yourself.)

FYI: the English-Japanese pair was imported from Tanaka Corpus, English sentences in which were picked up by a linguistic data scientist professor Tanaka and assigned to his university students for translation. It’s a shame but Japanese education institutions across the country at that time always mixed up the meaning of “by yourself” with “for yourself” and taught the mistranslation to their students…
