Kanji 堪 means “to tolerate, accept and forgive”. 堪るか or 堪るものか is a negation, meaning “cannot tolerate” or “unacceptable”. So, そんなことが本当でたまるか literally means “I cannot accept that kind of thing true” or “what the hell, that can’t be true!”
