たばこ, タバコ, or 煙草? Is it just a matter of personal preference as to which is used? Is the available choice proof that the word is now thoroughly naturalised? I see that タバコ comes from Portuguese, not English, so I would suppose that the vice, as well as the word, was introduced in the sixteenth century. Christianity didn’t take but tobacco did?
