English is not my native language so I was wondering about the translation about the second part “и больше не возвращался”. Can’t see how it’s imply “never”. Is there any alternative translation to English that is closer to the Russian?
You could think of it as “He left Japan and did not return anymore.” The word больше, like the word “more” in English, can refer to an additional amount of a substance, or to an additional amount of time, or to an additional number of instances of time (“episodes”). So больше не can mean either “not… any more” (referring to amount) or “not… anymore” (referring to episodes).
