谷雄がそのパーティーに出席していた。

English Translation

Mr Tani and his wife were present at that party.

I’m assuming 雄 is a title equivalent to “Mr.” but the transcript, the recording, and Google translate all disagree about how it should be pronounced.

Also, I guess his wife just isn’t mentioned in the Japanese?

The sentence set was imported from the notorious Tanaka Corpus…

Mr Tani and his wife were present at that party. = 谷夫妻はそのパーティーに出席していた。(pron. たに・ふさい)

谷雄がそのパーティーに出席していた。= A guy named “Tanio” was present at that party.

I have never met a person named 谷雄 in my life. 谷 is one of the common “surnames” in Japan, and Kanji 雄 is frequently used for “a part” of male “first names” (i.e. 雄 alone is not used as one’s first name). So, 谷雄 is apparently a typo.

One comment is left on the sentence source Tatoeba. But “Should it be 谷雌?” is also an incorrect and improper suggestion. Kanji 雌 is used only for animals. So, 谷雌 is even interpreted as “Ms Tani, the bitch” in a very derogatory way.
