Does this actually mean “Never did I think of it.” or does/can it also mean, “Even though I thought about it, I did not see it.”?

The original English translation is correct. But the Japanese sentence should be 思ってもなかった instead of 思ってもなかった. It’s a typo.
~してみる in Hiragana means “to try to do”. It doesn’t mean “to see”.
