In English, sure to “take” a lesson, but in Russian “брать” is more like the physical movement of taking something from a person, place or thing or to take responsibility for something. I could be wrong though, but I just don’t think it’s used in the sense of “attending” an event.
It’s not wrong. “брать уроки” is quite a common phrase. It implies some extra-curriculum activity, often private lessons or something similar, but I think, in English it’s more or less the same, isn’t it?
