This sentence was added to Tatoeba by a non-native speaker and edited by a native speaker to Η κατάσταση του Τομ επιδεινώνεται ραγδαία. As best I can tell, χειροτερεύει and επιδενώνεται are fairly synonymous but the latter seems more commonly used (see Glosbe) in a medical context.
