Can someone explain to me the grammar of this? Is this a phrase? Not even a genitive?

He’s in desperate need of the money.
It is idiomatic. There is a well-known poem - originally in Italian, by Alda Merini, but translated into Greek - which begins either ‘Δεν έχω ανάγκη τα χρήματα’ or ‘Δεν έχω ανάγκη από χρήματα’, meaning in both cases ‘I have no need of money’. The genitive would not be typical here.
