I don’t understand what this means (in English). Does it mean he tells his son what to do?
The English translation is wrong, in this context the word שכל means- he lost his son (his son fell in a war).

I wonder whether machine translation was used here to produce the English from the Hebrew. If so, it probably interpreted שכל as שֵׂכֶל (“intelligence, mind”).
