その家の側には川がある。

English Translation

There is a river beside the house.

Tip: 側 and 傍 are homophones and even native speakers easily get confused.

  • Use 側 when you talk about 1) a physical direction/location or 2) the side of someone on par with your status/ability.
  • Use 傍 when someone is the main topic and you play a supporting role.

For example, your friend is having a hard time and you say “I’ll be on your side”. In this case, use 傍 because you are trying to assist.
In case of “a right-hand man”, 側近 is the right word. The ability of the right-hand man is on par with that of his boss.
