English Translation
How are things with you?
- 景気はいかがですか? = How is your business going?
- 調子はどうですか? or 調子はいかが? = How are things with you?
景気 literally means “economic condition” (e.g. inflation, fast growing, declining). We use 景気 both in macro economics (the whole economic situation of a country) and in personal financial contexts. But 景気 refers only to monetary context.
調子 can include not only money flow but also physical and mental health (e.g. happily married; broken heart; professionally achieved). The English term “things” is inclusive, so 調子 is a much better translation for “things with you”.
