Is ひょっとして a synonym for もしかして, or are there differences in usage?

Reliable dictionaries (like this) register ひょっとして and もしかして or もしかしたら as synonyms.
However, I personally prefer ひょっとして over もしかして when a sentence mean 1) the projected situation had been unexpected to the speaker; 2) the probability is much lower; or 3) slightly more colloquial.
