There are three errors.
As you guessed, 堪える in this context shouldn’t be こたえる (meaning devastated or overwhelmed) but たえる.
Another error in the transcription is 十分. It shouldn’t be じゅうふん (Juu FUN) but じゅうぶん (Juu BUN).
Plus, 堪える sounds unnatural and should be replaced with 堪えうる (たえうる) in this context. 堪える here sounds like a present progressive verb. But the sentence is actually talking about his (potential) capability. So, you need うる especially when it is preceded by 十分 (fully).
