English Translation
Tom chopped firewood all afternoon.
I wondered about the verb σκίζω, which usually seems to mean something more like ‘tear’ or ‘rip’. And ‘κόβω’ seemed to be common for ‘cut firewood’. However, it turns out that ‘σκίζω’ is used like English uses ‘split’ - i.e., cut apart down the length of a piece of wood. So you can both cut (κόβω) and split (σκίζω) firewood.
