English Translation
I would love to write hundreds of sentences on Tatoeba, but I’ve got things to do.
This Japanese sentence was posted by a French speaker. not a native Japanese speaker. And there are three problems…
- することがありますよ, especially よ, means “you” have something to do, not “I”. It doesn’t match the first clause.
- 百文 means “one hundred”, not “hundreds of” sentences.
- {{サイト}} (loan word from “website”) is not mentioned in the English sentence. Learners cannot answer it.
My alternative translation is:
タトエバに百でも二百でも例文を投稿したいところだが、やるべきことが他にある。(タトエバにひゃくでもにひゃくでもれいぶんをとうこうしたいところだが、やるべきことがほかにある)
~したいところだが means “If I have spare time, I would love to do”. This phrase is usually followed by a negation.
“Hundreds of” is often translated as 何百もの, but it doesn’t work well in this sentence. 何百もの is more suitable for a descriptive sentence such as “there are hundreds of birds in this area” = この地域には何百もの鳥がいます. But we don’t use 何百もの is a hypothetical context.
“Sentences” should be 例文, not 文 in this context.
We don’t say 書く when we “contribute to our works to a website for a public use”.
