English Translation
I think I caught a bug over the weekend.
風邪を引く is more common than 風邪をひく.
風邪を引く literally means “to pull a bad wind”. Ancient Japanese people believed that a bad wind came into their houses and bodies and made them sick (source). English speakers say “catch” a cold, but we say “pull in” a bad (wind).
The abovementioned reference also explains why we don’t say インフルエンザ (flu) を「引く」but「罹る」(かかる).
