明日彼に電話をするのを忘れないよう。

English Translation

Please remind me to phone him tomorrow.

I would have translated this as:

I hope I (or you) will not forget to call him tomorrow". Is there some hint that I am missing?

The Japanese sentence doesn’t match the English sentence. The Japanese sentence means “You should not forget to call him tomorrow” like a bossy direct order because it ends with よう instead of ようにしてください. よう。even sounds like “dismiss”, “off you go” in a military command. I would translate the English sentence as:

明日彼に電話するのを忘れないように声を掛けてもらえませんか?

明日彼に電話するのを忘れてたら教えて下さい。

声を掛ける is “to throw a voice” literally. It includes “to say hello”, “to have a word”, and “to remind someone of something”.

The second sentence means “please let me know (only) if I forget to call him tomorrow”.

The first sentence is preferred if the speaker scheduled a certain timing to make a call and wants the listener to remind 5 or 30 minutes before it.
