When do we use 主人 as opposed to 夫？

If you describe your own husband, 主人 and 夫 are just synonyms. But I find 主人 a bit conservative because 主人 literally means the “chief” of one’s family, and implies that “the wife depends on him”.
If you describe someone’s husband, you cannot use 主人 because he is not “your chief”.
