Re: 的, まと is the only correct pronunciation in this context. If you pronounce it as てき instead, most of native speakers interpret as 敵 (enemy), not 的 (target). So, the original sentence even sounds like “the majority of the town love gossips, but he is against them, so he is the enemy of the majority”.
