人々はタイプライターをやめてワープロを使いはじめている。

English Translation

They are substituting word processors for typewriters.

FYI: this sentence pair and many other ones are originally sourced from Tanaka Corpus (田中コーパス) and migrated to Tatoeba Corpus. Tanaka Corpus was compiled by Professor Tanaka in 2001. So, I believe this sentence was written right after the release of Windows 95.

I don’t think “typewriter” in English or タイプライター in Japanese should be listed on Most Common 4,000. It’s become a less frequent word.

I think typewriters have become obsolete at least a decade before that.

On the other hand it is an easy word to memorize, and it is nice to encounter one of those every once in a while.

On the third hand, ワープロ is a useful word to know, and its meaning is not entirely obvious.
