I knew 犬 can be read as けん, but I thought it was used as such in compound words, like dog races. Can it be read as けんas a standalone kanji, or is the use here an error?

Your understanding is correct. The original Japanese sentence should be pronounced as かのじょは / たいへん / いぬが / すきです. As you explained, 犬 is pronounced as けん when it is proceeded by another noun such as 警察犬（けいさつけん）= police dog, and 狂犬病（きょうけんびょう）= rabies/canine madness.
The TTS from Google Translate properly pronounces it as いぬ.
