我々はニューヨークで彼らに出くわした。

English Translation

We came upon them in New York.

FYI: 出くわした basically has a negative connotation. So, the Japanese sentence implies that we don’t like them, or it was a bad timing/place to bump into them.

If the meeting with them was unexpected, but also it wasn’t an unpleasant event, ばったり会った (ばったりあった), 偶然会った (ぐうぜんあった), or 遭遇した (そうぐうした) would be better and safer.
