How does いかなる differ from 何？
My gut instinct tells me 何 sounds weird in this context, but I don’t know why.

You cannot replace いかなる本 with 何（なに）本 in this sentence. It’s grammatically incorrect. But replacing it with どんな本 works – I still prefer いかなる over どんな in this particular context because the whole sentence sounds like a lesson from life. いかなる is more formal than どんな.
