彼は自分で仕事をしなければならない。

English Translation

He has to do the work himself.

It should be 作業(さぎょう).
彼は仕事をしなければならない = He has to work. Attaching 自分で (himself) makes the sentence awkward.

Adding to previous post:
“仕事” (shigoto) is a more general term that can mean “job”, “work”, or “occupation”. It can be used to refer to one’s profession, daily work duties, or work in a broad sense.

On the other hand, “作業” (sagyō) is more specific and refers to a “task”, “operation”, or “work” in the sense of a specific task or process. This could be something like a manual task, a step in a process, a part of a project, etc.

So, if you’re talking about an obligation to perform a specific task or operation, using “作業” might indeed sound more natural. But if you’re talking about someone’s job or work in a broader sense, “仕事” would be more appropriate.

For instance, if the sentence is used in the context of someone needing to complete a specific task by themselves, such as assembling a piece of furniture or performing a calculation, then “彼は自分で作業をしなければならない。” (He must do the task himself.) would be more appropriate. However, if the sentence is talking about someone’s job responsibilities more generally, then the original sentence with “仕事” would be more appropriate.
