@ericaw We don’t say 彼/彼女 for animals. So, you cannot interpret this Japanese sentence as “I took my dog out for a walk.”
連れ出す has a connotation of “to force/encourage/manage someone/something to take a walk with me”. You can also use 連れ出す for dogs if they were reluctant to go out for exercise, or if there were some difficulties you needed to handle.
If taking a walk with your dog is just a routine, you may say:

私は犬の散歩に出かけた。（わたしはいぬのさんぽにでかけた）or

私は犬の散歩をした。
