I have trouble understanding this construction. Can someone explain to me what is going on here? It’s such a simple sentence but I’m having trouble wrapping my mind around it.

Is it the word “стал”? Here it means to begin. I think of it literally as, “What would you start to do [in this situation]?” You can also just say, “Что бы ты сделал?” Hope that helps!
