is the second aus at the end of the sentence really needed since the verb is steig aus?
I’d say yes and no.
In this sentence you have the (separable) verb “aussteigen” and the object “aus dem Flugzeug” with the preposition “aus”.
If you omit the last “aus”, then the verb becomes just “steigen”. I think it works in this case but doesn’t sound as natural.
In english, one similar example comes to mind:
Take your hands off of me!
Here you have the phrasal verb “take off”, which works similar to a separable german verb, plus the preposition “of”.
It happens quite often in german that the built-in preposition of a separable verb is the same as or similar to the preposition you need for the object.
