Tom and Mary seem to be fighting all the time.
Shouldn’t the Greek sentence be “Ο Tom και η Mary φαίνονται πως μαλώνουν όλη την ώρα.”
The English translation is not really helping here, if we were to translate this sentence literally, it would be:
Tom and Mary, [it] seems that [they] are fighting all the time.
It is possible to use φαίνονται here, but:
- it would slightly change the meaning (“it seems they are fighting” vs. “they seem to be fighting”)
- instead of πως, which introduces subordinate sentences, we would have to use να, which introduces gerund (“to + -ing” in English).
Another thing that is not helping here is that the syntax (word order) of modern Greek is much more flexible than the English one, so maybe it would be easier to compare the following sentences:
Φαίνεται πως ο Τομ και η Μαίρη μαλώνουν όλη την ώρα. / It seems that Tom and Mary are fighting all the time.
Ο Τομ και η Μαίρη φαίνονται να μαλώνουν όλη την ώρα. / Tom and Mary seem to be fighting all the time.
