Tom lade på i örat på Mary.

English Translation

Tom hung up on Mary.

Interesting one…how do you hang up in the ear, please?

My guess is that the expression dates back to the era of stationary telephones, where hanging up on somebody was a physical action that made a noise in the ear of the other party.

That made me laugh. I still have what you refer to as a stationary telephone!!! Where I live, although it doesn’t look particularly remote, we have terrible mobile service, some days. Having a landline is an essential back up.

On the telephony topic - here, in the UK, a village up in Scotland found out how unreliable mobiles are when they were without power for a week and couldn’t charge their phones or call for help. I’m hanging on to both my telephony modes!
