Tom konnte kaum gehen.

English Translation

Tom could hardly walk.

Why In German, is the simple concept of “walking” expressed in so many various ways

Could you elaborate?

Off the top of my head, I can think of

  • laufen
  • gehen

That are two ways I can think of. English has “walk” and “go” (also two ways).

Stroll, saunter, promenade, walk, go, amble, stride, hike, plod, trudge, tramp - I suspect every language has loads of words that basically boil down to ‘walk’, all with subtle shades of meaning that are lost when first trying to learn it.
