Tom hatte finanziell Probleme.

English Translation

Tom was in trouble financially.

Shouldn’t it be finanzielle?

Yes. I don’t know what the grammatical term for this type of phrasing is.
It works for other words, too.

For example:

  • er hatte gesundheitlich Probleme (this may subtly imply, that there were problems in a Situation, due to a health issue, that may be more temporary and isolated - but the interpretation of this may differ between people or regions in Germany)
  • er hatte gesundheitliche Probleme (this may imply more chronic conditions, possibly several of them)

In everyday conversation it would not really matter which Version you use to be understood.
