Ten pies zamarzł na śmierć.

  • zamarzać [r‑z] ‑am ‑asz impf, pf zamarznąć ‑nę ‑niesz = to freeze over

Can anyone help? Can the verb zamarzać be used OK to describe a person/animal freezing to death (as suggested by the original Polish sentence)? The sources I looked at seem to suggest it mainly refers to water freezing over e.g. a river, or objects freezing up e.g. a lock. Thanks!

Yes, “zamarzać” means “to freeze” when talking about objects/substances, and “to freeze to death” when used to talk about living beings.

Many thanks for clarifying this.
