The English translation implies I “often” (=“frequently”) receive letters from him, whereas to me the Italian sentence seems to suggest it is only “sometimes” or “occassionally”, thus occurring much more rarely, and thus not quite the same. Treccani and wiktionary seem to support the notion of “talvolta” being a less frequent occurence than “often”.
