Is the use of “in” common in such a context? Is it optional or obligatory?

That’s interesting. Sperare always takes di when followed by infinitive, and it is habit to say “speriamo in…” Hopefully a madrelingua can give a more grammatical reply.

Your doubt is probably coming from these different constructions:

  • Speriamo che ci siano buoni risultati.

  • Speriamo di ottenere buoni risultati.

My guess is that it’s coming from Spanish esperar not requiring a preposition. :slight_smile:
