I would have put Vill here. Could you shed any light on why Ville is more appropriate, please?

Ville is past tense; vill is present (of vilja).

“Smärtan vägrade ge efter” is another translation that comes to mind.

Thanks for this - was in a rush, when i first asked, and didn’t elaborate that machine translators wanted to make it “vill”.
I know Ville is past tense but something about that sentence scrambled my brains.

I like your other suggestion though - duly noted.
