Is this one of the instances where you can eliminate “pas” fron a negative verb?
Yes, it is one of these instances.
We have a conditional / if-clause (subordonnée de condition) and here we can drop “pas”.
Given the English sentence, I think the translation is actually good in this specific case.
With all that said, you will almost only see this construction in books or in fixed expressions.
This is hardly ever used when speaking.
