I am presuming “antreten” is the verb to describe competing in sport, but when would you use “konkurrieren”?

“konkurrieren” is more like a (longer lasting) rivalry. “antreten” is literally speaking about showing up at a competition and “stepping up” to the starting line, awaiting the starting signal.
“antreten” is also used in the military, meaning to line up in an orderly fashion for inspection etc. Here we have the literal “stepping up” to your position again.
“antreten” is basically saying “Here I am. Bring it on. I’m ready.” It’s also used when you accept and enter an office (“ein Amt antreten”), e.g. as president or something. It also means “to begin a voyage” (“eine Reise antreten”).
