Ciao. I think this is one of those phrases that can’t be translated wfw but means “he headed for…” or “he went in the direction of”. Happy to be corrected though.
I completely forgot to say, yes it should really be “countryside” - in the UK we often shorten it and say “Let’s go for a drive (or a walk) in the country”.
