This sentence could easily mislead anyone who doesn’t look up the meaning of the word ‘trapano’ into believing that it means an exercise or practice when it actually means a tool that drills holes. Learning through context is based on the idea that context is accurate.

Agreed. Reading “this is not a drill” and this english speaking brain immediately thinks of fire drills, ie rehearsals. Not actual drilling equipment.

Me too! Then I found “esercitare” for say, running soldiers etc, or 
un’esercitazione antincendio.
