“Buio” is appropriate in this context, but it is not the same as “scuro” or “oscuro”.

Buio specifically means “without light, missing light”. Something can be “scuro” on its own but if it is “buio” you cannot distinguish between light and dark items. It is not a quality of an object, but of the environment. At least this is its main meaning: it can be used figuratively in other senses, as you can read on Treccani:
