Quelle jolie fille!

Shouldn’t “cute” in “what a cute girl” translate to “mignonne” instead of “jolie”?

Even though the definition of mignon and joli are clear in the dictionary, the difference between both words is as thin as paper. It is more about one’s point of view. But for the sake of simplicity, let’s say that they are synonyms (but officially mignon is about having charm and joli is about being pleasant to see).

So you can say both:

  • Quelle jolie fille !
    or
  • Quelle fille mignonne !

Be careful about the word order with mignonne.

Oh, thanks. I thought “mignon(ne)” would be a BANGS adjective, but it looks like it’s an exception.
