English Translation
When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.
I was interested to read a few months ago that “da mangiare” is used to mean “food” rather more than “il cibo.”. Ngram seems to deny this a bit and show “cibo” still dominant, but as this is a database of books, not spoken Italian, it may not be fully accurate to contemporary speech.
