This sort of sentence feels very hard to remember. How does this sentence mean “Watch your tongue”?

Good news! It doesn’t! 
The French sentence means something like “Watch your step!”, but you would use it specifically when warning someone about something that looks like a stair or stairs in a staiway:
Also, “Attention” is more common than “Prends/Prenez garde.”
