"Potevo intervenire"?

Ciao. Interestingly this is translated as “I could intervene”. Just wondering why “Potrei intervenire” isn’t used here. Grazie in anticipo:-)

I could intervene (in the past) - Potevo intervenire
I could intervene ( possibility) - Potrei intervenire

Ciao adrianxu. Thank you, I can see it more clearly now, tho still tempted with “I could (have) intervened”. Interesting.
