Very generally speaking, “impreza” is less formal than “przyjęcie”, but both words are common and in many cases can be used as synonyms, for example:
przyjęcie urodzinowe, impreza urodzinowa / birthday party
przyjęcie pożegnalne, impreza pożegnalna / farewell party
przyjęcie towarzyskie, impreza towarzyska / social event
When the context is more formal, only “przyjęcie” can be used, for example:
reception at the embassy / przyjęcie w ambasadzie (not “impreza w ambasadzie”)
wedding party / przyjęcie weselne (not “impreza weselna”)
There are also some cases in which only “impreza” can be used, for example:
