“syndicat d’initiative”: tourist (information) office - I never would have guessed.

The other definition is “union initiative“. Not sure how it came to mean tourist information office! It even has its own separate dictionary entry in Larousse.

Office du tourisme / L’ office du tourisme.

- 400 Syndicats d’initiative (private organizations)

I remember learning “syndicat d’initiative” from my school days in the early 1980s. In fact this was the only translation we were given for tourism information office.
I’ve just checked with my old copy of “Mastering French Vocabulary - A Thematic Approach” with a copyright date of mid-1990s, and the only entry for a tourism information office/bureau is the syndicat d’initiative -
