Is this a prevalent construction used in polish? Robić dla kogoś za kogoś = To act as someone to someone?
It’s not exactly incorrect, but it sounds like some kind of a village dialect. Nothing wrong with that, but this is not something you will hear in every day situations and certainly not in the official/formal/polite form of language. What we say is simply “on był naszym przewodnikiem”.
