Oggi è il quindicesimo di giugno.

English Translation

Today is the fifteenth of June.

My understanding was that Italian did not use ordinal numbers to signify dates, even when the English translation does (so, “quindici giugno”). Is this one of those commonly-ignored rules or is the sentence just incorrect? What do i madrelinga say?

Hmm, I would either have written “Oggi è il quindici giugno” (today is the fifteenth day of June) or “Oggi è il 15 giugno” (Today is June 15th). Aspettiamo …

It is an archaic, formal, literary form.
